Bendall was a central figure in the avant-garde movement in Bordeux. She had studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux and befriended Henri Matisse and Albert Marquet at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere in Montparnasse.
Bendall founded the Societe des Artistes Independants and Le Studio, upon her return to Bordeuax in the 1920s. She helped to build an exchange of art between the provincial capitals and Paris, and initiative which is still in place today. Her work is a rare blend Fauvism and Expressionism, which make her works perfect harmonies of colour but also have a very contemporary appearance. Bendall’s paintings were exhibited by the Galerie de Paris in 1936 alongside work by Kees van Dongen, Raoul Dufy and Max Jacob. Her work is now in the collections of the Centre Pompidou, the Paris Museum of Modern Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Bordeaux.
