On the occasion of Messums London first contemporary photography exhibition ‘Resonances’, visual artists Nii Obodai and Justin Keene were in conversation with Stephanie Blomkamp, founder of Oath magazine, on the visibility, circulation and championing of African photography today.
Stephanie Blomkamp was born in Johannesburg South Africa and is the driving force behind Oath, an annual print publication from South Africa. As Editor of Oath, Blomkamp has taken a pledge to push the medium of photography from South Africa and beyond. She carves out a specific space for emerging voices across the African continent. Her greatest motivation in life is photography, and her purpose with Oath is to provide a much-needed dedicated space for a new generation of photographers. Blomkamp lives and works in Cape Town, South Africa.
Oath is a photography platform and print publication homegrown in Cape Town, South Africa. Its mission statement is to celebrate the art of photography, champion emerging voices from Africa, and shine a light on overlooked archives. The photobook, or in Oath’s case the collectable journal, is a supreme platform to generate culture, honor the medium, and raise important questions about the role of photography in shaping a continent. Oath exists to offer visibility.
