Emsie studied glass at West Surrey College of Art and Design. She has worked in various studios around the world, including three years on the island of Murano, Venice. There she assisted in the making of wine glasses and chandeliers. It’s clear that her time in Italy with the undisputed masters of her trade has been influential on her work. Since her return to England in 2002, she has run her own studio in Dorset, developing her skills and making functional, decorative and abstract work. Emsie specialises in stemware.
The added time pressures of working in glass, a highly temperamental material that can only be worked on while molten and malleable, adds an extra dimension to her work, with everything being done free hand, using calipers for measuring which produces a perfect but hand-made looking result.
