Howard Phipps born in 1954 Studied Fine Art (Painting and Printmaking) at Cheltenham Art College 1971 – 75, followed by a postgraduate year at the University of Sussex. He worked in West Devon from 1976 – 80, before moving to near Salisbury where he is still based.
The artist has a special interest in Wood engraving, a method of relief printmaking where the polished surface of a block of end grain Boxwood is engraved using traditional tools with names such as spitsticker and scorper. On completion the surface is inked, using a roller, and an impression is taken on paper using an Albion hand press dated 1862.
