First Step

Bronze
26 x 8 x 7cm

The figure’s head is directed down along the body, which is stable and perfectly proportioned. He stands and their right foot appears to be being lifted off the base as the knee is bent in motion. Although, without arms, the pose of the figure is very evocative of the kouros, a free-standing ancient Greek sculpture that represented male youths. We cannot be entirely sure if the figure is at the end of the beginning of their first step, it is something that Edwards has left for the viewer to decide.
